I've never really been one to participate in gossip. Out of curiosity, what makes it so appealing?

when you don't wanna think about how awful your own life is you partake in gossip of others so that you can feel better about yourself ;D

That seems a bit backwards to me. Wouldn't it make more sense to feel better about yourself by doing something to make yourself happy? Such as pursuing a hobby or self-care of some sort?
